Functional rehabilitation is a combination of physical therapy exercises and stretches combined with physiotherapies for reducing pain and inflammation. Functional rehab is unique because it also incorporates agility and kinesthetic or proprioceptive training to improve athletic performance and balance.
Dr. Peterson develops a functional rehab plan for you based on your overall health and athletic goals, taking into account your current condition and any injuries you’ve experienced in the past. Dr. Peterson may begin with therapies and exercises to relieve pain and improve your range of motion before progressing your care plan to incorporate strength training and agility, depending on your needs.
Functional rehab can be used to recover from acute injuries, heal chronic pain, or improve your athletic performance. Some benefits of functional rehab include:
Functional rehab is an option for anyone, no matter your age or athletic abilities. All of Dr. Peterson’s rehab plans are personalized based on your unique needs and physical abilities. Dr. Peterson also offers sport-specific rehab plans if you’re looking to improve your endurance, strength, or coordination.
During your functional rehab session, you should arrive wearing athletic clothing and bring water and a towel with you. Dr. Peterson begins your session with a warmup to increase blood flow to your muscles and safely increase your heart rate. He may also incorporate myofascial release, electrical stimulation, or other physiotherapy treatments to relieve pain and warm up your muscles.
Once you’re warmed up, Dr. Peterson takes you through a series of movements and exercises aimed at improving your mobility, flexibility, and strength. Your session may include work with exercise bands, foam rollers, free weights, or bodyweight exercises.
At the end of your session, Dr. Peterson takes you through a cool-down and explains which exercises and activities you can do at home to meet your goals or get out of pain. Your entire session lasts about one hour. Dr. Peterson aims to teach you the skills necessary to continue with care on your own, so you don’t need to come to the office all the time for treatment.
