Chiropractor Q & A

What does a chiropractor do?

Doctors of chiropractic such as Dr. Peterson, also called chiropractors, are manual therapy physicians who manage and treat a variety of neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) conditions. Chiropractors have extensive training in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches
  • Sciatica
  • Joint pain
  • Sports injuries
  • Herniated discs
  • Arthritis
  • Pregnancy-related aches and pains

Dr. Peterson performs comprehensive orthopedic testing — the same as an orthopedic surgeon or physiatrist — and basic neurological testing to determine if you’re a candidate for care. Common chiropractic treatment plans incorporate chiropractic adjustments, myofascial release techniques, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and recovery services.

What is motion palpation?

Dr. Peterson uses a technique called motion palpation to diagnose and treat areas of joint fixation and pain. Joint pain, especially is the spine, can also be accompanied by stiffness, limited range of motion, tightness, and a “stuck” feeling.

With motion palpation, Dr. Peterson analyzes the movement of your joints to identify areas with limited range of motion or abnormal motion, including joints that are hypermobile. This is a hands-on technique supported by research to safely and effectively identify spinal segmental dysfunction issues without the need for expensive X-rays or an MRI.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?

A chiropractic adjustment is a hands-on treatment technique performed by Dr. Peterson to restore normal motion to joints in your spine and extremities. If Dr. Peterson determines you’re a candidate for care based on your physical exam and motion palpation, he recommends a chiropractic adjustment.

During the adjustment, Dr. Peterson places his hands gently over the affected joint and applies a quick, direct force. You may hear a popping or cracking sensation or feel movement at the joint. With an adjustment, the affected joint returns to a normal range of motion, which can cause a release of carbon dioxide gas within the joint that results in a popping or cracking sound.

Is chiropractic care safe?

Yes. According to the American Chiropractic Association, chiropractic is one of the safest forms of noninvasive care available for back pain, neck pain, and headaches. Chiropractic care has fewer risks than over-the-counter and prescription medications, joint injections, and surgery for joint pain.

The main side effect of chiropractic care is mild soreness at the treatment site for one to two days following care. This soreness can be compared to soreness you feel after exercising. Dr. Peterson provides at-home recommendations and exercises you can perform to reduce the risk of soreness and help you recover quickly.
