Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) used to regulate or improve the flow of energy, also called qi or chi, through your body. Dr. Schneider uses tiny, sterile needles placed at strategic points over your body to address areas of pain, discomfort, or symptoms that are causing concern.

Common uses of acupuncture include for:

  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Headaches, including migraines
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Allergies
  • PMS symptoms
  • Infertility

To determine if you’re a candidate for acupuncture, Dr. Schneider performs a complete physical and TCM exam, which includes questions about your symptoms, taking your pulse, and sometimes assessing the color of your tongue. Dr. Schneider uses your consultation and exam results to analyze your symptoms based on internal and external health changes you’re experiencing.

How does acupuncture work?

Dr. Schneider uses acupuncture principles to identify areas where energy flow is disturbed or “blocked,” and places acupuncture needles at specific locations to target your symptoms and improve energy flow. Studies show that acupuncture stimulates the immune system to reduce inflammation and release endorphins to fight pain after treatment. Brain researchers are also observing a connection between regulation of brain activity and skin stimulation from acupuncture needles.

There are hundreds of acupuncture points all over your body between the top of your head and the soles of your feet that can be used for treatment, with the most commonly used points located in your hands, arms, feet, and legs. For certain conditions, Dr. Schneider may use points on your abdomen or back. In those cases, she’ll drape you with a cloth to ensure you’re warm and covered for modesty.

What can I expect during an acupuncture appointment?

During your acupuncture session, Dr. Schneider begins with your consultation and exam. After that you undress in a private room if needed, and she has you lie down on a comfortable padded table to access areas of your skin for treatment. When you’re ready, Dr. Schneider cleans your skin with rubbing alcohol and removes the acupuncture needles from their sterile packaging.

Dr. Schneider then gently taps the acupuncture needles into your skin. You may feel a quick prick or pinching sensation when the needles are inserted. After a few minutes, you may notice a mild throbbing sensation at the needle site, though it’s not painful.

Generally, acupuncture sessions last one hour from beginning to end. Afterward, Dr. Schneider removes the needles and cleans your skin again. Following the session, you can return to your normal daily routine.
