As the only chiropractor in the West Loop neighborhood of Chicago, we assess every patient's posture when they come in the door with back or neck pain. Watch the video to learn some of the finer points. For one, using a Mckenzie lumbar roll takes all the responsibility off of your muscles to hold you in a good position. In order to get the most of the roll, we recommend scooting your butt all the way back in your chair, and placing the roll just above your belt line. This position will allow you to recline over the pillow to create lumbar lordosis, a fancy word for your natural low back curvature. If the curve is too intense, you can slide your butt away from the chair back, or adjust the roll up or down to find relief. We recommend using the roll anywhere you sit for more than 10 minutes, including your office chair or in the car. This change, combined with Extension based exercises, is often a first line of defense for back pain or sciatica problems.
